Divisions and Categories

Every effort is made to place judges in your choice of division and category. During registration, you will be asked to select your preference by division and then category within that division.

Divisions include:

Elementary:  Judges evaluate student projects only. No students are present. These projects are from students in grades 4 and 5. Projects are expected to be investigative, not demonstrative, and to show knowledge of the scientific method. Categories:  Biological Sciences, Consumer Sciences, Earth/Space Science, Mathematics, and Physical Sciences

Secondary: 

  • Team:  Team projects are found in junior (7th and 8th grades), 9th grade, and senior division. Teams of two or three students work together to complete an investigation. Each student is expected to be thoroughly knowledgeable about the project. Junior, 9th grade and senior team projects will involve student interviews.
    Categories:  Behavioral/Biochemistry/Medicine & Health, Botany/Environmental/Zoology, Physical Sciences,
    Engineering/Computer/Mathematics
  • Junior:  Judges evaluate projects and interview students from grades 7and 8.   
  • Ninth:  Judges evaluate projects and interview the 9th grade students.
  • Senior:  Judges evaluate projects and interview students from 10th, 11th and 12 grades.Categories:  Behavioral/Social Science, Biochemistry/Microbiology, Plant Science, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth/Space Science, Energy and Transportation, Engineering, Environmental Science, Mathematics, Medicine and Health, Physics and Astronomy, and Animal Science
