Education-Industry United Partnership Delivers at Clear Creek High School

A project that began in February as a result of the Education-Industry United partnership is complete and the requested products are on the way to work sites across the United States. Clear Creek High School Construction Technology students built 20 LOTO (Lock out Tag out) Simulators that will be used in field training operations for Zachry Group.

Representatives from Zachry Group were on campus Friday, May 17, 2015 to pick up several of the simulators.  Construction Technology students designed the process and procedures for manufacturing the simulators, then built them with raw materials purchased and delivered by Zachry Group.

In all, 23 Clear Creek High School students worked on this project that sent 11 simulators to various sites in the U. S. and 9 simulators that will be used in Texas. The purpose of the Piping Simulator is to provide a means for hands-on demonstration of competency.  This competency demonstration is required for all employees involved in tasks that require isolation and de-energizing of valves and associated piping.

The model consists of three pumps and motors that are controlled by start/stop stations and electrical disconnect boxes. The three pumps are fed by a storage tank, pump into a common header thru a control valve before being piped to a heat exchanger. Disappearing pipes and numerous flanges allow the instructor or the user to experience custom mock-ups for single or dual isolation.

The simulator can also be used to demonstrate LOTO (Lock out Tag out) activities which includes chains and locks with red tags being placed on the devices so that they cannot be used until the issue is cleared. The interconnected piping and valves allow the flexibility to instruct and to make sure that individuals understand the concepts to perform line breaks and properly isolate and drain systems in order to safely perform the necessary work.
