Adapted P.E. Park Day Draws Over 1000 Students, Staff & Volunteers

Nearly 1,200 Clear Creek Independent School District students, staff members and volunteers gathered at Walter Hall Park in League City for the annual Adapted PE Park Day. A district tradition for more than 30 years, this year’s event on April 9, 2015 was the largest yet.

The park was filled with more than 550 students with disabilities, 300 Peer Assistance and Leadership (PAL) students from CCISD high schools and approximately 200 school staff members. Activities included fun runs, 30 stations developed and operated by the PALS, inflatable jumpers, face painting and snow cones.

“This event gives our students with disabilities a day to be successful in activities that would be overly challenging during a regular field day competing with able bodied students,” said Mark Geiselhart, CCISD Adapted PE Team Lead. “We have activities for students of all ability levels and physical limitations.”

While beneficial for the students with disabilities, the event has also proven memorable for the high school student volunteers. “We have had PAL students tell us this event has given them an interest in pursuing education of students with special needs as a career,” Geiselhart said. And they are not the only ones who look forward to the event. “Each year at the start of school, many of our students and even some of the staff start asking our APE team what day the event will be held.”

Adapted PE Park Day is a collaboration between the Adapted PE Team, Special Education Services, transportation, district nurses, Galveston County Parks and Recreation and numerous community partners.
