Students at Weber Elementary are learning how to give back to their community. On January 31, Weber students participated in an evening of giving during the school’s Super Bowl of Service event. During this night of giving, students and their parents participated in a variety of projects focused on creating meaningful ways for children to take part in service learning and community initiatives.

Held in its second year, the Super Bowl of Service night allowed families to participate in several service projects including, note writing for a student battling cancer, letters to veterans, posters to raise awareness about recycling and creating notes for nursing home residents. Additionally, fire safety sessions were offered by the Houston Fire Department.

“The Super Bowl of Service night provides an opportunity for us to reach out to others and demonstrate caring as well as show citizenship,” said Weber Elementary counselor Vanessa Diggs. “It gives our students voice and choice since they are using their own talents and abilities to make an immediate impact. It encourages students to develop empathy for others and to make a difference in our world.”

The Super Bowl of Service night marks the culmination of an instructional-based service learning project demonstrated by each grade level leading up to the event.
