Learning Keyboarding

keyboardTyping is a fundamental life skill. Learning to touch type leads to efficiency in composing long-form text, doing online research, and communicating online.

Researchers suggest that in grades K, 1st and 2nd, students develop an awareness of the location of keys on the keyboard. Moreover, they add that the appropriate age to start formal keyboard training is between seven to ten years of age when hand-eye motor coordination and physical capability are developmentally appropriate.

keyboardIt is recommended that students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades use proper finger placement on the keyboard and be able to touch type, or type without looking at the keys or fingers.

Things to remember while typing:

  • Use the correct fingers to strike each key.
  • Memorize keyboard reaches for fingers.
  • Sit up straight and keep feet flat on the floor.
  • Keep home row fingers touching the home row keys; even during a difficult reach.
There are several keyboarding websites available on the internet to learn keyboarding.

Here is Common Sense Media’s review and comparison of Typing.com and Typingclub.com for learning how to type
