Yvonne Tibai

Yvonne Tibai

Your Full Name: Yvonne Tibai

Years in CCISD: I have lived in CCISD since 1979.

Subdivision/Neighborhood: I live in Pecan Grove in League City.

Occupation: I retired from teaching in August 2016 after spending the last 20 years of my career in CCISD.

Spouse's Name: Tim Tibai

Children: Heather Joyce, a 2004 Clear Creek High School graduate.

Why did you choose to live in CCISD?
I am a native Houstonian who initially moved to the Clear Lake area to be near the water. I discovered League City and moved here in 1987. I stayed because of the wonderful lifestyle this area offers. Being a teacher, the educational opportunity afforded by CCISD was an important part of our decision to remain here and raise our family. I was also proud to have the benefit of teaching in my own neighborhood for many years.

Are you currently a CCISD volunteer? If so, what school(s)?
While not currently a CCISD volunteer, I have spent many years volunteering in numerous capacities throughout the district. I was honored by both Ferguson Elementary and Clear Lake Intermediate for my volunteer work on those campuses.

List your participation in CCISD schools and/or district parent clubs, business partnerships and/or committees:
I have served on the following:
Campus Instructional Improvement Council (CIIC) Clear Lake and Victory Lakes Intermediate Schools, and the District Educational Improvement Committee (DEIC) where I served as chairman for 3 years. I also served several years on the Site-Based Management Review Committee, Calendar Committee, Fine Arts Steering Committee, Fine Arts Curriculum Committee, Finance Committee, and Employee Benefits Committee. I have also been a member of the Ferguson Elementary PTA, Clear Lake Intermediate PTA, Victory Lakes Intermediate PTA, and Clear Creek High School PTA.

Include any other areas in which you have supported CCISD not included in the previous question:
As a community member, we are proud supporters of the FFA program in CCISD. While not major contributors, we attend the auction each year and do ""add-ons"" for numerous students. Not everyone can raise a grand champion, but the kids who don't make it to auction work just as hard. We look forward each year to helping some of those kids reach their college goals. As a teacher, I supported CCISD through my active participation in the Texas Art Education Association where I served as Middle School Division Chairman for the state. I have lectured both at state and national conventions about the work we have done to promote art education in CCISD. I served as Regional Chairman for the Junior Visual Arts Scholastic Event where teachers and students from the greater Houston area came to CCISD for their chance to earn medals. I have also had the honor of my students representing our district at the annual Rodeo Art Show in Houston.

List any community organizations in which you are currently involved in, including any offices currently or previously held:
I am League City proud and actively participate in numerous city activities. Last year, I was appointed by Mayor Pat Hallisey and approved by City Council as a member of the Ethics Review Board. I am a member of the League City Garden Club and participate in events such as the 4th of July celebration in the park and Paws & Claws Animal Adoption. I volunteer with our special needs students at the League City Music Festival and the Rotary Club food distribution at League City Elementary. I have also been a Girl Scout leader, Sunday School teacher, and Youth Group Advisor.

Considering your skills and talents, what positive contribution would you make as a member of the Board of Trustees?
I may be a retired teacher, but I'm not done trying to make a difference in the lives of my kids and my district. Being a member of the Board of Trustees will be my full time job. I believe my years of experience in working with numerous committees and ESC staff affords me the opportunity to begin work immediately. My experience in working with League City, the mayor, and City Council, I will be able to serve as a liaison between our rapidly growing city and CCISD. I look forward to participating in activities in our schools throughout the district, day or night. I feel it is important for a district our size to have board members who are visible, engaged, and available to our parents and communities.

What roles do trustees play in affecting student success?
In my opinion, a problem with teaching as a profession is that everyone thinks they know what teachers do. And they don't. So they prescribe solutions and they develop policy. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. They don't take the time to listen to those who know. Those who could teach. The teachers. I have spent my life on the receiving end of school board policies, and have learned a valuable lesson: the principal's job is to take care of the teachers; the teacher's job is to take care of the students. When our teachers are taken care of, our kids will be successful and our district will shine. As a trustee, I will meet with and listen to the teachers in each school in my district. I will take their knowledge, experience, and ideas to help write policies that will benefit CCISD and our kids.

What critical challenges face the district, and what are possible solutions to address those issues?
As the Board of Trustees District 5 member, I will be representing the area of CCISD that is experiencing the most growth. I promise that I will fight for the staff and resources necessary for our growing population. We face funding challenges each year imposed by the legislature, and my participation on the Finance Committee has taught me that the choices we make are not easy. One thing I can promise you is this: if it becomes necessary to hold a bond election, I assure you that every cent of that bond will be absolutely essential to have my full support.
