Clear Brook High School students have “ideas worth spreading,” which is the objective and inspiration behind TED and TEDx-sanctioned events. Based off a proposal and application submitted by the campus, Clear Brook High School was officially notified in August that they were approved and the school would be the site of a TEDx event.

TEDxClearBrookHighSchool is scheduled for May 22 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Although attendance is limited, the presentations will be Livestreamed for those who want to tune into the speakers’ talks.

Once the school received notification of their TEDx selection, campus administration began a presenter search campaign whereby students submitted short videos pitching their ideas and topics relating to the theme, “The Choice Is Ours.” More than 50 students submitted videos. In the end, the selection committee chose seven presenters from Clear Brook High School, one from Westbrook Intermediate School and two alternates.

The following are the student presenters selected based off their video submissions:

Fizza Dhanani, Why I No Longer Have Shame to Bury

Claire Tichy, Steps to Building Your Comfort with Failure

Braden Hoefer, The Simplicity of Saving Energy

     Christa Westheimer, The New Normal

     Syamantak Payra, Innovation Nation

Smiti Gandhi, Living Energy: Using Bioluminescent Bacteria in Solar Cells

Chanmarie Un, Culture: The Silent Struggle of Immigrated Americans

“Clear Brook High School has a deep culture of research and is a place where students have great ideas that have come out of their high school experience,” said Michael Harris, Clear Brook High School teacher and TEDx event organizer. “The TEDx opportunity is especially exciting because it will provide a wider platform for students to share these ideas and unique perspectives with others in the school, within the District and beyond.”

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

TED's open and free initiatives for spreading ideas include, where new TED Talk videos are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from thousands of volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed; the annual million-dollar TED Prize, which funds exceptional individuals with a "wish," or idea, to create change in the world; TEDx, which provides licenses to thousands of individuals and groups who host local, self-organized TED-style events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, which selects innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
