Jason Clark

Jason ClarkJason Clark | District 3 Candidate

Please share some background about you and your interest in serving on the Clear Creek Independent School District Board of Trustees.

I am a 12-year resident of the Clear Lake Area with 17 years of experience as an educator in Pasadena ISD. As a parent, educator, and taxpayer residing in Clear Lake, I am interested in helping to improve our schools, especially in the areas of special education and CTE. As a parent of a child with special needs, I am an advocate of a progressive approach to special education. This begins with generating a district culture of high expectations for special education students that includes preparing them for life beyond the classroom. My voice on the board will have a positive influence on creating this culture. I also have a child in the Alpha program in CCISD. It is equally important to ensure that CCISD strives to maintain and expand a culture of enrichment that encourages students to find their passion beyond academics.

List your participation in CCISD schools and/or district parent clubs, community and civic involvement, etc.

Both of my children attend CCISD schools, and I am involved in the various activities held there, including after-school clubs with my daughter and Challenger Special Olympics with my son. I am also a member and fundraiser for the Greater Houston Families Exploring Down Syndrome (GHFEDS) organization.

Considering your skills and talents, what positive contribution would you make as a member of the Board of Trustees?

As an educator and administrator with experience ranging from elementary to high school, I bring a unique perspective to the board to help shape and guide the decision-making process. An educator’s voice with this amount of grade level experience needs to be present on the board. I have firsthand experience on interpreting board policy and implementing it on a campus and at the classroom level. I have led my campus Safe and Civil Committee to identify campus safety needs and implemented measures to meet those needs. I am fortunate to be on a campus that embraces and prioritizes district initiatives and implements them efficiently. My experience implementing and managing district initiatives will provide valuable insight and decision making when adopting policies that effect the district collectively.

In your opinion, what role do trustees play in affecting student success?

Two of the major roles of the trustee are hiring and holding accountable the superintendent to ensure the critical issues are being resolved in accordance to the goals of the strategic plan and approving the budget to ensure that resources are allocated efficiently and appropriately for the benefit of our hard-working educators and our deserving students. A trustee must keep the students’ best interests at heart, and as a collective body, set goals for the district to meet. Additionally, a trustee must provide sound governance and oversight to ensure success is being achieved by all students.

What critical challenges face the district, and what are possible solutions to address those issues?

CCISD has done an excellent job of educating students and providing enrichment programs and activities beyond academics. CCISD needs to apply that same standard of excellence to its at-risk and special education programs. At-risk and special education students require a more focused and proactive approach to their learning needs. At-risk students typically have learning gaps that need to be identified and addressed on an individual level. Systems need to be put in place to ensure those gaps are being identified and met. As mentioned in Question 1, CCISD and stakeholders need to adopt a culture of high expectations for special education. The voice of the parents needs to be heard and valued in regard to their child’s education plan.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) needs to be a priority in CCISD. CTE serves as a pathway to engage many students and give them purpose in their education. It is necessary to build partnerships with local business that will support that endeavor. Relationships need to be built to support and foster the skills and employment of our students after graduation.

CCISD needs sound fiscal stewardship practices. The budget must be monitored critically to ensure taxpayer money is being spent efficiently to have the biggest impact on student learning and success. The focus needs to be on supporting teacher needs in the classroom to ensure that impact ultimately reaches the students.

Lastly, school safety continues to be an issue across the country. Gone are the days of practicing lockdown drills once a semester for compliance purposes. A culture of safety needs to be present and felt on all campuses. Teachers and students need to be educated and trained on the most up-to-date safety practices that will empower them in critical safety situations.
