What are my options for sending my student back to school?

Families will have two options to receive an education.  First is Brick and Mortar instruction, which is a traditional school setting Monday through Friday. CCISD is extending the school day 10 minutes to give students and staff additional time to wash their hands.

Beginning July 13, 2020, parents may select Clear Connections Online Learning Program or Brick and Mortar through Skyward Family Access.


Will CCISD require students and staff to wear face masks?

At this time, based on the high number of COVID-19 cases in our area, Clear Creek ISD expects all students (as developmentally appropriate) and all staff to wear a face mask or face covering when a physical distance of 6 feet is not possible, during transitions with large groups and while on the school bus. Exceptions to this requirement may be requested for individuals with disabilities or medical conditions which prevent them from wearing face coverings. This expectation may change depending on the number of COVID-19 cases in our area and guidance from the Texas Education Agency.    

Do students have to wear a mask all day?

It is not our intent for students and staff to wear their masks consistently for up to eight hours a day. Everyone will be required to wear a face mask during arrival, dismissal, bell changes or moving around the campus. Our hope is that we can pull back on some of these health requirements as the weeks and months progress if we are successful in our efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19. We will work to create physical space and time in the day for students to safely remove their masks. We appreciate the cooperation from parents, students and staff.

Does my student who is younger than 10-years-old have to wear a mask?

When they cannot maintain a physical distance of at least 6 feet from others, all children are required to wear face coverings, as developmentally appropriate. From an educational perspective, we use this term to describe the ability of the child – cognitively, physically and emotionally – to understand expectations and be taught the safe use of face coverings. Students are required to wear masks during bus transportation, arrival, dismissal, bell changes or moving around the campus. We encourage parents of younger students to begin discussing and practicing how to safely wear face coverings with their children over the next few weeks so the transition will be easier for them.

Will my student have to wear a mask inside the classroom?

Our facilities team will provide teachers sample schematics on how to maximize space and perhaps distance students far enough so they can safely remove their face masks during class. We want our teachers and students to feel comfortable, but we also need them to stay healthy.

How will teachers be able to teach with a mask on?

Teachers will have certain personal protective measures available to them, such as face masks or face shields.

What if my student must ride the bus? Will masks be required?

We are encouraging parents, if they can, to transport their children to and from school. Students eligible for bus transportation will always be required to wear a face mask on the school bus because physical distancing of 6 feet is not be possible. Hand sanitizers will be available when boarding the bus, and buses will be cleaned between each run.


With the opening of schools in August, have you secured enough Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for teachers, staff and students?

We have a large supply of PPE (38 pallets) that has been delivered to us by the Texas Education Agency. This shipment includes masks, face shields, gloves and thermometers.  Additional equipment such sneeze guards, hand sanitizers, etc. are also on order.

Why isn’t CCISD reducing class sizes to give more room for social distancing?

This is a matter of resources. Clear Creek ISD does not have enough classrooms or teachers to reduce class sizes by 50 percent or more. 

What will breakfast and lunch look like?

Breakfast and lunch served by CCISD will be limited to grab-and-go meals. At the elementary level, students will be spread out in the cafeteria and others will eat in their classrooms to allow for adequate spacing. At the secondary level, students will be spread out in many areas of the school and outdoors, weather permitting. When transitioning to and from the cafeteria, in lunch lines, etc. students will be expected to wear a face covering. Once seated and eating, students may remove their masks.

Due to space limitations, no visitors will be allowed for breakfast or lunch.

What will parents be expected to do prior to sending their child to school?

Parents will be asked to administer the COVID-19 Health Assessment daily, which includes checking their children’s temperature and looking for common symptoms of the virus. Parents will need to keep their student home if he/she feels ill.  Each household will be mailed a refrigerator magnet detailing this health assessment and how to administer it.

What will happen if a student presents symptoms while at school?

Individuals who develop symptoms of the COVID-19 illness will be sent to the school health clinic, placed in isolation and sent home immediately. Parents/Guardians will need to make every effort to receive children within 30 minutes. We ask parents to include this important measure in your family’s plan of emergency contacts who can come and pick your student up if they become ill during the school day.

Why is it important to keep distance from one another?

Just as with any respiratory illness, including flu and common pediatric respiratory illnesses, they are spread by droplets. Those droplets can occur through talking, coughing, sneezing, etc. The more distance you can provide between you and another person will aid in prevention of contracting COVID-19.

What are the steps that a campus must make if a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19 outside of school?

CCISD has created a COVID-19 Standard Response Protocol, which have been reviewed by medical experts, in the event there is a case or cases of confirmed COVID-19 among students or staff. Each facility will be operating at Stage 5 at the start of the school year. While the protocols that follow provide District leadership guidance on how to respond, the school district will always err on the side of caution and may take additional steps in any one stage. At the end of each school day, no later than 5 p.m., parents and staff members at each campus will receive an email with an update. We have notification measures in place for people who were in close contact with the infected individual, as well as cleaning measures that will need to occur within the space.

This guidance is subject to change as the Texas Education Agency releases procedures and protocols for school systems.

What happens if my student’s school shuts down due to COVID-19 cases?

In the event a classroom or a school has 10% of the student/staff population with COVID-19 at one time, or otherwise determined by the Superintendent of Schools, students will move to intermittent School-to- Home Learning. This is not the Clear Connections Online Learning Program nor will it be programming similar to that of the Spring 2020 emergency closure. In a School-to-Home learning model, students will temporarily learn from home and their teacher(s) work remotely in a classroom and deliver instruction in real time (synchronous instruction) as well as self-paced work (asynchronous instruction).

  • Students will have a formal start and end time of the school day during School-to-Home learning.
  • Daily attendance will be required. 
  • Students will receive direct authentic instruction from their teachers as well as participate in group and individual work. 
  • CCISD traditional grading system is maintained including GPA and Class Rank.
  • Teachers will be in a CCISD classroom, delivering instruction in real-time a large portion of the day.
  • Internet and computer access are necessary for K-12. Individual technology needs will be addressed.

Will students be able to do PE at school?

Whenever possible, physical education classes will be held outside to allow for maximum social distancing between students. 

  • Visual markers will be on the gym floor and bleachers as reminders of social distancing rules. 
  • Locker room and class size will be determining factors when it comes to dressing out for secondary physical education classes. 
  • Students will be placed in smaller, appropriate groups for instruction and activities for appropriate social distancing. 
  • Students will need to provide their own water bottles. 
  • Restroom use will be the practice of “one in and one out.” Equipment will be disinfected after each use. 
  • Any activities bringing students into close physical contact will be avoided. Activities requiring multiple students to touch or handle the same equipment will be avoided. 
  • Sanitizing areas and access to handwashing will be provided.

How are teachers preparing for the start of the school year?

The District will be providing training for each teacher, especially utilizing the itsLearning platform. We will work with them on developing strong relationships with students and with parents, whether it be in a virtual environment or whether it's in that face-to-face school environment. We are committed to ensuring that, regardless of the learning environment, that the method of teaching is engaging and that students feel that connection with the teacher.

Is there an update on special education services and what efforts are being made for those students who may be medically fragile?

One of the recommendations from the Safely Reopen Committee was to ensure that each student receiving special education services receives an individualized health plan. Prior to the beginning of the school year, the special services department will be reaching out to parents to talking about their unique needs and the right learning environment. Will CCISD still encourage perfect attendance?

Our top priority is the wellness of students. Clear Creek ISD will remove the attendance requirement for final exam exemptions for the 2020-2021 school year. The Texas Education Agency still requires 90% attendance for course credit.

What about teachers who have school-aged children? How are you accommodating their needs if a school shuts down?

We are developing plans to help support teachers during those transitions.

What if my student is enrolled in Clear Horizons Early College High School?

San Jacinto College has announced they will not be having in-person instruction in the fall. Incoming 9th and 10th grade students will have the opportunity to attend school in person at CCISD’s Learner Support Center in the fall. The majority of classes that 11th and 12th grade students take are through San Jacinto College, so those will be done virtually. We are working on what the Independent Study Mentorship (ISM) option will look like.

What type of technical equipment do parents and students need for Clear Connections OR if we have to move to a School-to-Home learning?

Students will need a desktop or laptop computer. CCISD students in grades 4th-12th grade will be provided a laptop. The District is working on a plan to support those in Kindergarten through 3rd grade.


How will the district be prepared to handle all students online during School to Home or Clear Connections?  Does the district have enough bandwidth?  Will there be a test run?

The district has been 1:1 since 2013 and over the last two years, the district’s Internet bandwidth with all students in a brick and mortar setting has averaged between 25-35% capacity with peak days at no more than 50% capacity. When students are at home, very little Internet traffic comes back to the district. Microsoft Office365, itsLearning and some textbooks are cloud-based services, and all traffic is direct between the student’s device and the respective service provider. Web filtering for student devices utilizes a cloud-based web filter called Lightspeed Relay. It does not depend on any connectivity back to the district and the former filtering product that did, Global Protect, is no longer in use on student devices. The CCISD Single Sign-On (SSO) Portal is hosted in district, but it is only a gateway to CCISD’s instructional resources which are all cloud-based. Skyward and most of the online textbooks only make a connection back to the district to authenticate. All other traffic is directly between the student device and the service provider.

Why might the internet not work?  Why can’t my child connect to itsLearning, Dreambox, SeeSaw, or some other application?

Connectivity is dependent upon many factors, which may include the home Internet Service Provider, CCISD’s Internet Service Provider, the respective website’s Internet Service Provider, and the website’s IT infrastructure. At home, factors that might prevent connectivity include issues with the Internet Service Provider, a modem or router that needs to be restarted, a household’s capacity that has exceeded the number of connections for multiple members streaming video, electrical utility issues, or a computer that needs to be updated or requires additional software.  
A majority of the services used by students are web-based.  The website vendor must have enough bandwidth to meet the expectations of all users.  This was a challenge faced this past spring, when for the first time, all school-aged children and office workers were all online at the same time.  Nearly all Internet Service Providers and web-based platforms had to adjust to handle the capacity of so many more users simultaneously logged in.  

Why have some of the CCISD Livestream videos not worked, and how do we know these problems won’t exist in School to Home or Clear Connections?

CCISD’s Internet connection was up and stable during each live streamed event and never exceeded 5% of the district’s Internet bandwidth. These events have been held in a new studio for CCISD and we are currently working to determine the root cause of those issues. We do not believe those issues are related to CCISD’s Internet Service Provider as no other service or system had issues during those times. During the next few weeks, a different streaming provider will be tested, and an audit will be performed on the equipment used in the studio. As noted above, the majority of CCISD’s online services and websites are cloud hosted by their respective service providers with limited Internet traffic routing through the district. The district cannot guarantee there will not be a day when the Internet Service Provider goes down (similar to what happens to many residents at home) or when a primary district router needs to be restarted, however these instances should be very infrequent or rare.

Who is eligible for Clear Connections Online Learning Program?

Clear Connections Online Learning Program is offered for CCISD students in grades K-12. This is a program of choice for families who are concerned about returning to a Brick and Mortar educational setting. The program is taught by CCISD teachers. Visit to learn more.

If my student begins the year online through Clear Connections then chooses to switch to Brick and Mortar in the next grading period, will my student still be able to receive bus service?

Yes. You will need to notify CCISD Transportation at 281-284-0600. 

Can I choose to switch my student from Clear Connections to Brick and Mortar throughout the school year?

Yes, parents will have the opportunity to make this change at the end of each grading period, which is every nine weeks.

Will specialty programs, such as Dual Language, WAVE and Science Magnet be offered through Clear Connections?

WAVE will be offered through Clear Connections Online Learning Program. Clear Creek ISD is evaluating interest in Clear Connections from Dual Language and Science Magnet families. There needs to be enough interest to assign a teacher(s) to teach those unique course offerings.

If I choose to move my student from Clear Connections to Brick and Mortar after the start of school, will my students spot in WAVE or Science Magnet be held for them?

Yes, they will be able to attend WAVE or Science Magnet at the campus in which they are zoned to and their spot will be held within those programs.

Will students who enroll in Clear Connections be able to participate in extracurricular activities on campus, such as band, orchestra and sports?

Yes. Students who choose to enroll in Clear Connections will be allowed to take a Clear Connections athletics or fine arts course virtually and participate in after-school practices and games on their home campus.

Will Pre-AP/AP courses be offered through Clear Connections?


How can I request a course through Clear Connections Online Learning Program that is offered at the campus level?

Courses offered through Clear Connections are limited by student interest, staffing and course requirements. Not all courses are available through Clear Connections, especially at the high school level.
