This is the image for the news article titled Parent Resource Center Six-Month Check-InThe Special Education Parent Resource Center (PRC) has become a great place for parents to access resources and attend trainings since its grand opening in fall 2019. Due to increased and consistent email communication, PRC Specialist Paula Marshall has seen more and more parents participating as the school year has progressed.

“I’ve had 28 calls or visits since the spring semester started, which is double what I received in the fall after we opened,” she said. “Many parents have utilized the walk-in days to accommodate their schedules.”

Autism Support and Guardianship Support continue to be the most requested workshops and due to high demand, Marshall has added more trainings that cover STAAR testing, community partnerships and assistive technology. The center rotates between scheduled workshops and walk in/open lab days to assist parents and caregivers with varying levels of support and topics.

“Some support sessions can go as long as 1-3 hours, depending on the level of support needed,” she said. “Things like guardianship and transition for autism support tend to take longer as each situation is specific to the student.”

In order to have the PRC be available to as many parents as possible, Marshall is also offering more flexible hours. Due to parent requests, she will be piloting new evening workshop options on four days in April. On April 6-7 and 13-14, the Center will be open from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. and will offer different workshops at 12 p.m., 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on those days. To register for these workshops and more, please visit the PRC calendar.

Another aspect of the Parent Resource Center is how it supports community partners in getting word out about educational programming that is beneficial to students with special needs.

Fortunately, both the Helen Hall and Freeman Branches of the Harris County Library System are introducing special education programming this semester, something Marshall hopes CCISD families can take full advantage of. As an example, the Freeman Library recently invited her to attend a free reading program where preschool-aged children read to therapy dogs from the Faithful Friends organization.
