HCDE Scholastic Art AwardsOut of more than 5,000 visual art entries, 18 Clear Creek ISD students earned the National Gold Key Award for the 2019 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition. Harris County Department of Education recognized the art and writing talents of 3,263 teens throughout Harris County this year as regional sponsors of this celebrated contest.

Clear Lake Intermediate eighth grader Carolina Colon was also honored as one of only five students to receive an American Vision Nominee Award for her drawing and illustration piece titled “Lavender Sky.” These five works of art, from across all categories and grades, were selected from the list of 361 Gold Key students as the “Best of Show” at the regional level.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, founded in 1923, provides young artists and writers in grades 7-12 with the opportunity to showcase their art and writing talents. The competition’s mission is to bring outstanding visual art and writing created by teens to a national audience by showcasing the work and encouraging creative and career development.

Top-award Gold Key recipients advance to national judging to be considered for Gold and Silver Medals which are announced March 12 and awarded on June 6 through a ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Also on March 12, a panel of jurors will select one artist from the American Vision Nominees to receive and American Vision Medal, a non-financial highest honor.
