CCISD Seeking Bigs and Littles to Defend Potential

CCISD Seeking Bigs and Littles to Defend Potential
Posted on 04/12/2019
BBBSAlthough the 2019-2020 school year is months away, plans are already finalized to expand CCISD’s Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) program to an additional four intermediate campuses next year. Throughout National Volunteer Month, Clear Creek ISD, in partnership with the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization, is asking community members to help inspire a young person and “Defend Potential,” as is the BBBS rally cry this year, by becoming a Big.

Several dozen students in CCISD have been newly-identified to participate in the program and have expressed interest in being matched with a mentor for guidance and support in the coming school year. “Our students have a lot of weight on their shoulders in these complicated times,” said Dr. Jeanne deVezin, CCISD Coordinator of Prevention and At Risk Services. “Our data shows that with the attention and intervention of just one more caring adult, attendance and even grades improve, forging a path for the future success of that child.”

Through CCISD's Big Brothers Big Sisters School-Based Program, the Bigs and Littles meet for one-on-one mentoring at the intermediate school once a week, or at least three times a month. The matched pair read together, play games, work on homework or simply talk about life or personal issues - just as friends do.

“For many children, it’s the showing up and encouragement they receive from their mentor that makes the difference as they struggle with life’s hardships,” said Karl Garcia, Big Brother volunteer at Clear Lake Intermediate. “As a mentor for 25 years, I am still moved by the fulfillment and purpose simply sharing this time with our youth brings me.”

Mentors must apply to be a Big and provide references and permission for a confidential background check. Then the prospective mentor will participate in an interview with BBBS to help make the best quality match. After the match is made, the Big and Little are introduced and begin their friendship journey.

CCISD campuses with Big Brothers Big Sisters programs in place for the 2019-2020 school year are Bayside Intermediate, Brookside Intermediate, Clear Creek Intermediate, Clear Lake Intermediate, Creekside Intermediate, League City Intermediate and Space Center Intermediate schools.
