Though the certification typically occurs four to five years into program implementation, Armand Bayou Elementary achieved the designation ahead of schedule.

“We are so honored to achieve this goal,” said Principal Jenny Thomas. “The accomplishment validates all of our hard work and represents the greatness that can be achieved when all stakeholders work together.”

As one of Clear Creek ISD’s many Leader in Me schools, Armand Bayou Elementary has created a culture of empowerment for students, staff and community through character development, academic goal setting and leadership. The program is grounded in Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and pairs with quality tools and educational best practices. The school’s program is sponsored by campus funds, the Armand Bayou Elementary PTA and the Clear Creek Education Foundation.

“Our vision for growing leaders has been especially important during the school closure,” Thomas added. “It is essential, now more than ever, to continue showing our students what great leaders can accomplish and how they can serve their community.”

Armand Bayou Elementary would be judged on whether it met certain criteria, including effectively teaching leadership principles to all students through multiple approaches and whether leadership is seen in the physical environment and felt through a culture of caring, relationships, and affirmation.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Leader in Me officials conducted the review for the Lighthouse certification virtually.

“We used multiple digital resources to make this happen including Zoom, Flipgrid, and PowerPoint,” Thomas said.

Armand Bayou Elementary will hold its Lighthouse Certification for two years while the staff continue to foster their students’ growth in exemplifying a leadership culture. Once that time has passed, the school may recertify to maintain its Lighthouse Certification.

Though students and staff are excited about their hard-earned success, Thomas says there is always work to be done.

“Though we are proud of our achievement, our school is never finished growing and improving,” she said.
