JonathanWhen Jonathan Haberer sets his mind to something, he is going to do everything in his power to achieve it.

At the young age of 18, he has had to overcome many obstacles in life that have led him down a different path than others in finding success.

“My parents divorced and a lot changed in our lives, so I felt I needed to step up to be there for my family,” said Jonathan. “I started working when I was 14 and have done everything I could to focus on helping out.”
Jonathan made the decision towards the end of his time at Clear Springs High School to graduate a semester early so he could begin working full time.

“I took every opportunity I could to advance my time at school because I already had a full-time offer for when I graduated,” said Jonathan.

He was hired on immediately as a shift manager with his local CVS store and quickly moved up to become an operational manager working 59 hours a week after graduation.

“I was overseeing three to six people, some twice my age,” said Jonathan. “I had a lot of opportunities for problem solving, conflict resolution and decision making.”

But things were not always easy with the amount of pressure he had in his life.

“There were times when I just felt tired. But after everything I’ve gone through, if I were to have given up then I would’ve been in a really bad situation,” said Jonathan. “I needed to step up and take control of my life.”

This level of maturity has pushed Jonathan to create a better life for himself and find a career that brings his passions in life together.

“When I was in school, I focused almost entirely on math and science,” said Jonathan. “I could pretty much sit in the rest of my classes and know I’d pass them. But when I got into physics, algebra, and eventually pre-calculus, I just honestly fell in love with it.”

His enthusiasm for physics was channeled into his aerospace engineering class at Clear Springs, which is a Career and Technical Education course that provides students with hands-on learning opportunities developed with NASA to explore the world of aeronautics.

“The engineering projects we did and the stuff we designed is what I eventually want to end up doing in life,” said Jonathan. “It was just so much fun and we actually finished the build of a small airplane before I left.”

Jonathan’s interest in engineering, however, didn’t begin in high school, but rather many years before.

“My mom pulled out an old yearbook picture of me from kindergarten and the caption read ‘I want to be an engineer because I like trains’,” said Jonathan. “So, I have wanted to be an engineer since before I can even remember.”

He is currently working towards getting his IT Technician certification so he can get a job doing something that interests him while working to pay for college.

“My goal is to go to college to get a degree in aerospace engineering with the ultimate dream to design space thrusters for space shuttles and satellites,” said Jonathan. “It’s going to be a long ride, but I am pushing for it and not giving up.”
