For over 30 years, Assistance League of the Bay Area has made significant impacts on CCISD students across all campuses.

There has been tremendous growth in the philanthropic organization’s programs due to increased fundraising and community need. With the help of members, community volunteers, donors, grantors, and partner organizations, Assistance League has been able to stay true to its mission to change one life at a time.

The organization’s largest program, Operation School BellÒ, had to adapt the program model this year due to COVID-19. Committee members have been virtually working since March to devise a flexible dressing plan which focuses on the health and safety of members, retail partner store personnel, and the families of the students identified by their schools. Working closely with the local Kohl’s and Target stores and the corporate offices of both businesses, several options were discussed and explored.

Five Assistance League members are allowed to enter the stores for two hours before opening to the general public. Members shop for the clothing items requested for each student, pay for those items, remove tags, package with a hygiene kit, and label with the student’s name and school. Additional volunteers then deliver the packaged clothing to the students at their home schools or sites predetermined by the school district.

In 2019-2020, over 3,200 economically disadvantaged students from Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade were dressed across eight school districts, 1,031 of which were from CCISD.

In addition to Operation School Bell, Assistance League works closely with Communities In Schools – Bay Area, Inc. through the organization’s program, Operation Support Our Schools. The Operation Support Our Schools committee is working diligently to develop processes that will allow the organizations to safely serve the students once in-person learning begins on September 14.

bagsOver $18,000 in services were provided to students in twenty-two campuses in Clear Creek and Dickinson ISDs during the 2019-2020 school year. These services included over $12,500 in nutrition support, along with vision referrals, dental referrals, and non-food campus support. Ten CCISD schools are being served and these efforts will impact at least 2,160 students.

Through Operation Cinderella, a philanthropic program that began in 2006, prom night is made possible for high school senior girls and boys. Before the pandemic school closures, the program had provided 11 girls with formal attire for the CCISD JROTC Military Ball and 25 senior girls with prom attire in 2020. Changes to the program are still being evaluated for the 2021 Prom season and the committee will work closely with school personnel as the school calendar solidifies.

Students are referred for Assistance League programs by their teachers, counselors, or school nurses. Criteria for selection may include financial need or special needs such as homelessness.

Assistance League of the Bay Area is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization that changes lives through philanthropic programs in the Houston Bay Area community. For more information, visit www.assistanceleagueba.org.
