Students Hand Over CheckAcross the country, the Class of 2020 made a lot of sacrifices during their last year of high school due to COVID-19. They had to figure out how to adapt to learning from home and missed important rites of passage, like dancing with their friends at prom.

Students at Clear Creek ISD’s Clear Lake High School turned a missed milestone into a way to give back to the heroes fighting on the frontlines of the pandemic.

The Class of 2020 Student Class Officers, representing their senior class peers, decided to find a place to donate the $5,000 that would have been spent on their prom.

“We thought there could be no better way to put our raised funds to good use than to lift the people who were putting themselves on the line for all of us,” said Evelyn Salbilla, Clear Lake High School Student Council representative.

Senior Carl Ho put the group in touch with Ascend Houston, who has been working on their “Feed Your Hospital” initiative to give free meals to healthcare heroes.

At the end of June, class officers and senior class representatives presented the check, which will provide 500 meals to workers at Clear Lake hospitals.

“We really appreciate the donation,” Ascend Board Member Linda Luong said to the students. “Thank you for all of your hard work. Definitely looking forward to giving back to the community.”

Feed Your Hospital has delivered more than 14,000 meals in total at 120 hospitals in the U.S.
